You may have seen those commercials where an artist paints a picture on canvas upside down in just a few minutes. When the artist turns the picture right side up, everyone goes, “Ah, it's a turtle.” (or panda or tiger). I thought we writers could do the same thing. Writers are also artists except we use words to paint our pictures, although I guess we need a thousand words to paint one pictutre. It's actually tougher, in my opinion, because you have to write updside down AND backwards. I figured that when the canvas was turned right side up, everyone would say, “Ah, it's a short story.” (or poem, etc.). So I tried with my writers' group. I wrote a witty, short story. When I was done and turned it right side up, no one said anything--not impressed. Oh well, I tried.
