It is also the birthday of the US Army. The Continental Congress founded the Army on this day in 1775. It is no small thing that Flag Day and the Army’s birthday are on the same day. Military people may disagree with our government policies and political parties but we all agree to defend our nation and its flag. It fact, when young men and women join the military, they take an oath to defend the nation and the constitution. We take this oath seriously. There is no oath taken to a particular person, party, or group. That is direct contrast to many countries, which require a loyalty oath. It has been this way since the early days of the country. Although, some individuals may be politically active, the military has stayed out of politics. That is also in contrast to many foreign countries. The military subordinates itself to civilian leadership as directed by the constitution. That is why the President is the Commander-in-Chief of all the military. It is this simple idea that has protected democracy in the USA for the past 238 years.
Happy birthday, you old flag. May the Army always protect you.
