Apparently, there is a war of words between Police Chief David Oliver, of Brimfield, #Ohio, and #Kanye West. Oliver is upset because Kanye said that when he is doing a concert, he is “...putting my life at risk, literally” and “... this is like being a police officer or something, or like war or something.” Oliver told Kanye to “Check yourself, before you wreck yourself.” That phrase is going viral. I do not want to be quick to judge before looking at the facts. I did a quick search and discovered some things:
No. of US soldiers killed in Afghanistan as of 10/17/2012: 2,012 Wikipedia (I won’t talk about Vietnam)
No. of US soldier killed in Iraq between 2003 and 2012: 4,486 Wikipedia
No. of police officers killed in 2012: I could not find a number but I am sure it is high.
No. of fire fighters killed in 2010: 72. The average is 95/year. NFPA
No. of rock stars killed in concert: No clue. Who keeps track of this?
I am sure that Kanye was thinking about Justin Bieber and the time a water bottle struck Justine during a concert in South America. Had that been a grenade or a Molotov cocktail, he would have been seriously injured or killed.* Rumor has it that Justin is under a medical watch for PTSD.*
I do believe that Kanye was exaggerating and should apologize to police officers and soldiers everywhere.
*Sarcasm for the humorously challenged.
