Leadership is a long-term process of getting people to accomplish goals by providing purpose,
direction, and motivation. Kouzes and Posner in their book, The Challenge of Leadership, describe leadership as a relationship. It is a relationship between those followers and their leader. All managers and associates must understand what leadership is and does. Effective leadership development requires mutual recognition and acceptance of leader and associate roles.
Leadership is a reciprocal relationship between leaders and followers. There cannot be one without the other. Companies tend to hire leaders or promote people into leadership positions.
It is a shame that not all leaders are elected to their position. I think we would have better leaders for the most part. Not that politicians are all good leaders-they are not. Many are a
disappointment, but I think that is because when we voted for them, we did not really know them. We knew only their image as projected by their campaign. Locally, we usually do a better job. I think that elections should be used for layoffs too. All employees should get to vote for who goes and who stays. Maybe then, people will be nicer to each other.
