Personally, I do not see the need for Stand Your Ground laws. I thought everyone had the right to self-defense to protect him or herself against loss of life or sever harm. Maybe not. I do not understand what additional protection under the law would be necessary. Zimmerman’s lawyers did not evoke the Stand Your Ground law.
Zimmerman had the right to defense himself if he felt in danger. I would have preferred a warning shot fired, but I was not there. I also would prefer if the law was for defending one’s home or family. In the Zimmerman trial, the law would have been flaky at best. Zimmerman created the situation, which resulted in the loss of
life. He could have backed off. He could have displayed the gun earlier. He could have just followed at a safe distance. Self-defense seems a little stretched when a person goes into harm’s way.
I am against citizens carrying firearms. I wonder if Zimmerman would have been so bold if he was unarmed. Would he have placed himself in harm’s way? Firearms give people a false sense of security. People don’t consider options that are more rational when they know they can pull out a weapon. I don’t think anyone would have been killed if Zimmerman was not armed. Martin did not strike me as a person who would beat a man to death.
